Hailing from the land of friendly beavers and maple syrup, Son brings with him a wealth of experience from both sides of the sporting world. As an athlete, he represented Canada for Jiu Jitsu and Pankration while playing tennis and volleyball competitively in university. He pursued a professional tennis career where he lived and trained out of IMG Bollettieri Tennis Academy in Florida and played internationally for a few years before he decided to go back to university to become a physiotherapist.
Son received his Bachelor of Kinesiology from the University of British Columbia, focusing on high-performance strength and conditioning and clinical sports medicine. He made the move to complete his Doctor of Physiotherapy degree at the University of Melbourne in 2021, and now calls Melbourne home.
Son has worked with athletes, teams, and organizations ranging from local to national and Olympic levels. He worked five years with the Canadian Women’s National Field Hockey team as an athletic trainer and as a strength coach and athletic trainer for the University of British Columbia, covering volleyball, soccer, rugby and field hockey. In Melbourne, Son has worked with the Rebels State Team rugby, Rugby Victoria, Football Australia, and has been a strength coach and physiotherapist with the University of Melbourne Lightning Netball Club in the VNL and Netball Victoria since 2020.
He has a keen interest in ACL and other knee injuries, human performance, biomechanics, and helping people return to sport and exercise from injury and enjoys using strength and conditioning techniques to help others achieve, and be, the best they wish to be.
In his non-work life, he is a lifelong video gamer, a “board game nerd” and a D&D game master. He can also talk hours about cooking, food, culinary arts, the Vancouver Canucks, travel and his two cats – Princess Doughnut and Duchess Bagel.
Son is fluent in English and Vietnamese.
