What to look for in a remedial massage therapist?

Choosing the right remedial massage therapist can make a big difference in your recovery and overall wellbeing. In Australia, where the industry is self-regulated and standards are high, knowing what to look for ensures you receive safe, effective and personalised care.

A remedial massage therapist should carry a strong understanding of anatomy and musculoskeletal conditions, maintain professional memberships and insurance and stay current with ongoing learning.

Feel free to ask about their specialisations as many massage therapists go on to obtain further qualifications like cupping, pregnancy massage or dry needling. Your treatment plan should take a collaborative approach involving options to always prioritise your comfort, safety and consent and focus on your individual goals.

Rest assured, our Life Ready Yokine team hold the necessary qualifications and valuable industry experience to ensure you’re in capable hands throughout your health journey.

What to expect in your first session

All booked in, excellent! Now what?  Here’s a breakdown of what you can expect during your first visit and any follow-up appointments.

When booking, you would have received confirmation with a client history and consent form to be filled out prior to treatment. This helps give your massage therapist a head start formulating your game plan. Didn’t receive it? No worries. We’ve got you covered with old school paper copies at reception.

Initial Appointment: Beginning with a quick but important discussion of your medical history, current concerns and goals, your massage therapist will gain a better understanding of your specific needs.

Assessment: Your massage therapist will assess your range of motion, identify areas of pain and discomfort and carry out any relevant special tests to help pinpoint the root cause of your issues. This allows health rebates to be claimed as we can track your progress.

Treatment Plan: With your assessment results, a treatment plan is then tailored to you. This is an opportunity to discuss techniques and ensure you are feeling comfortable and informed.

Massage: Your massage therapist will step out of the room to allow you to undress and get comfortable on the table. There are towels and sheets provided for draping. When they re-enter, treatment will begin. Let your massage therapist know if you do not wish to undress as we can work around this. If anything changes during the massage or other areas of concern present, your massage therapist will pause and discuss them with you, later noting these down to reflect the treatment carried out.

Post Treatment/Re-test:Now you should be ready to take on the world! Following your remedial massage is a great time to rehydrate, retest and check progress, discuss the treatment and provide aftercare like specific stretching and exercises to support you outside of the clinic.  Don’t forget to rebook at the front desk to keep your progress on track. While we’re here to help every step of the way, reaching your goals takes time, and consistency makes all the difference.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I get a remedial massage if I’m pregnant?

Absolutely! It’s a specific area of training, so we recommend checking with our reception team to make sure your chosen massage therapist is qualified to provide this treatment.

If you become pregnant and your current massage therapist isn’t trained, they’ll happily refer you to a colleague who is and who they believe will be a great fit for you.

How much will my heath fund cover?

This can vary significantly depending on your health fund and your level of cover. It’s a good idea to check with your provider before your visit so you know what to expect. If you’re covered, we can process your rebate on the spot with our HICAPS machine so you’ll just need to pay the gap.

I don’t like needles, are there alternatives?

Of course! We wouldn’t do it without your consent and it’s important for us to prioritise what your ideal treatment is and ensure the best outcome for you. Just let us know.
