Do your hamstrings always feel tight, no matter how often you stretch?
Many people assume tight hamstrings simply mean they need to stretch more, but persistent tightness is often a sign that something else could be going on. While stretching may feel good in the moment, it doesn’t always address what’s causing tightness in the first place.
Understanding why your hamstrings feel tight is the first step towards finding relief and moving more comfortably (and giving your foam roller a well-earned break).
Causes of hamstring tightness
Although tight hamstrings are often associated with running and jumping sports, they’re also common among people who spend long hours sitting, driving or working at a desk.1
Other reasons your hamstrings may feel constantly tight could indicate:
- Muscle weakness
When other muscles like your glutes, quadriceps, hip or even core muscles are weakened, your hamstrings can end up doing extra work to help keep you stable. Over time, this can leave them feeling tight or more prone to aches and pains.1
- Previous injury
A history of hamstring worries, lower back injury or other lower-limb issues can lead to ongoing hamstring tightness. Even scar tissue, poor movement habits developed over time and protective muscle guarding (your body’s overprotective friend) can also contribute to persistent symptoms.2
- Active overuse and fatigue
If you’ve recently increased your activity levels, your hamstrings may be feeling the effects. A longer workout, extra household tasks or a particularly active day can all contribute to tightness.2
- Prolonged Sitting
Being sedentary or spending long periods sitting at a desk or in the car keeps the hamstrings in a shortened position. Over time, this can contribute to stiffness, reduced mobility and that familiar feeling of tightness.1
“Hamstring tightness isn’t always caused by overuse. It can also develop from underuse, or be referred from the lower back, neural tissue or the hip or pelvis. A comprehensive physiotherapy assessment helps identify the most likely source of your symptoms, allowing us to create a targeted management plan that addresses the main contributors, not just the tightness itself.” – Luke Gregory, Life Ready Head of Clinical Education
Do I need physiotherapy or remedial massage for tight hamstrings?
The answer may be both. Physiotherapy and remedial massage can complement one another, and both have their place. Choosing between them often comes down to your goals, preferences and which approach feels right for you.
- Physiotherapy
With years of experience helping people stay active and moving, our Life Ready physiotherapists can help uncover the cause of your hamstring tightness which may include assessing your strength, flexibility and movement patterns to get a clearer picture of what’s going on or discuss whether any previous injuries may be contributing to your current pain.
Based on your assessment, your physiotherapist can also prescribe more targeted exercises, to help you move with greater ease.
And if stretching or exercises alone aren’t doing the trick, they may use hands-on treatments such as dry needling or manual therapy (joint mobilisations or soft tissue massage) to help reduce tightness and ease muscle soreness. They can also provide practical tips on posture, workstation setup and everyday movement habits to help keep hamstring tension from creeping back in.
- Remedial massage
Our remedial massage therapists focus on manual techniques like myofascial release or deep tissue massage which are designed to release tight muscles in the body, increase flexibility and help you feel looser and more mobile.
If there’s no obvious injury or underlying condition (it could be as simple as your muscles needing some recovery time), remedial massage therapy can be an effective way to help keep you doing the things you love.
If you have private health insurance, you may be eligible for a rebate on your consultation, depending on your level of cover.
